A Minority Story:

Story of Homofobia in Cuba

“¡Homofobia no! ¡Socialismo sí!' Identity, culture, gender and sexuality in today’s Cuba”
On May 14, 2016, in Havana Cuba, World Day Against Homophobia was celebrated,
which was led by a queer African-American woman. History tells us that although
Cuba does not "exist" homophobia, your level of treatment for being gay is different
depending on your color or your province.

The reading is full of stories in which one is told by a woman who expresses that she
was scolded a lot as a child and that she therefore understood that her behaviors were
not of a child were of a child and she felt more identified with that gender.

Many of the stories talk about the fact that they discriminated against them as children
more than anything since at that age our parents get so used to the conventional that
we attack what we believe is not, it is something that I think is very sad.
